Testimonial: Sandra Forkan

My name is Sandra Forkan and I completed the Health Service Skills course at GTI. I am a qualified hairdresser and have worked in this area for 30 years. I was looking for a new direction in my life and caring for others comes naturally to me. As a mature learner, I was hesitant to believe I could integrate into a class, let alone complete 11 modules related to caring for older people. However, by Midterm, I had made some great friends and completed 10 projects all related to the healthcare area. Completing this course has not only given me a new qualification working in an area I love but learning at GTI gave me the opportunity to believe in myself as an adult learner. Ongoing assessment suited me perfectly and I was able to keep up with everything. I was fortunate to be accepted on the Erasmus Plus programme which allowed me to work in a busy hospital setting for 3 weeks in Madrid during Easter. I am happy with the personal and professional skills I have developed at GTI and am grateful for the learning opportunities I encountered as well as the new friends I made. I am now working with a care agency here in Galway city where I provide care, communication and companionship needs for older people in their own homes.

Erasmus + Placement

Every year, students who successfully meet the criteria for this exciting opportunity, will travel to Madrid in Spain where they will work under supervision of senior care workers in a busy hospital setting for 3 weeks. These placements are fully funded by the European Commission.
