Upholstery and Restoration Skills 5M2012

You will learn to design and make original pieces of furniture for use in the home or public buildings. You will experience the satisfaction of turning your own ideas into reality through the use of wood and other materials.

This course is designed to
  • Prepare participants for entry to Furniture colleges eg GMIT Letterfrack

  • Develop the design and woodworking skills required in the furniture industry

  • Prepare learners for apprenticeships in furniture or woodwork

Entry Requirements
  • Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied, or equivalent

  • Interview

  • Mature applicants welcome

How the course is taught
  • This is a practical course where learning takes place primarily in workshops and drawing rooms

  • GTI has developed a style of teaching to meet the needs of a diverse community of learners.

  • Whenever possible, we use a Learn-by-Doing approach to make the learning experience more realistic and enjoyable.

  • We provide learning supports that are tailored to meet the needs of individual learners.

Progression to Higher Education
  • Students who successfully complete the course may gain entry to Third Level Institutes and Colleges through the Higher Education Links Scheme eg GMIT Letterfrack

  • Students can also progress to UK Furniture Colleges


Students can progress on to a variety of woodwork related apprenticeships

  • DES Programme Participation Contribution: €200
  • QQI Examination Fees: €50
  • Materials Fees: €200

  1. What type of materials or woods will I work with? The learner will work only with the highest grades of solid timbers e.g. Spalted beech, Elm and Ash.

  2. What prior knowledge and experience is required for the course? None. The learner progresses from the basic level of woodworking skills to a thorough knowledge of the woodwork design process.

  3. Who designs the pieces of furniture that the students make? The individual learner designs his/her own pieces of furniture using an extensive range of woodwork and furniture design tools.
