Dressmaking Beginners

Course Outline:

How to measure yourself and your pattern. Amend your pattern to fit. 

Pinning and cutting.  Good cutting is the key to a well-made garment.

Introduction to your sewing machine and sewing practice.

Darts and gathering. How to fit around the body.

First seams and general make-up.

Lining. Learn to line your garment with or without a pattern.

Zips, buttonholes or elasticating.

Stitching to finish garment.

Hemming by hand and machine.

Hand finishing.

Materials List

  • Paper scissors
  • Commercial pattern for simple garment eg:skirt
  • Measuring tape (Hickeys)
  • Box of pins (dressmaking)
  • Material scissors (Hickeys)
  • Fabric,zip,button and interfacing (Hickeys)
  • Matching thread
  • Tailors chalk (Hickeys)
  • Needles (hand and machine assorted)

Pattern and Fabric must be bought in Hickeys. All others can be bought in Anthony Ryan’s homeware or the Singer shop. Try using your student cards if you have one.

Hopefully you should all have a finished garment at the end of this course and be encouraged to continue making clothes or using your skills to transform or upcycle your older wardrobe items. I hope you enjoy.
