Course Overview

This programme is suitable for individuals who are caring for an older person, working with older people or seeking a change in career. The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to meet the full and holistic needs of older people in a variety of care settings and to develop an awareness of the increasing needs of the older person in the community today

  • The Ageing Process and its impact on an Older Person
  • Working and communicating with the Older Person
  • Caring for the Older Person with Specific Needs
  • The Importance of Quality Assured Care Settings for the Older Person
  • The Role of the Healthcare Assistant
  • Health Promotion for the Older Person
  • The range of concepts to include preparation for Retirement, Active Ageing, Lifelong learning, Ethnic and Cultural Influences that impact the older person
  • The needs of the Dying patient and their families

Assessment

  • Project 40%
  • Skills Demonstration 60%

Entry Requirements (If Relevant, Garda Vetting Info etc )

This module is suitable for those students who are in a healthcare or community care work setting or have relevant experience in caring for an older person. 

In order to gain work experience in this area, students must achieve Garda Vetting. 

To complete the assessment, students will need work experince in this area.

Tutor Profile:

Emma has eight years’ experience as an Adult Education Tutor in OFA, FAR and various Healthcare areas. Emma is passionate about adult education and her work as a tutor. Emma has extensive experience both professionally in the area of healthcare and enjoys to share her experience and add to her students’ skills. Emma qualified as a nurse in 2012 after attending GTI Nursing Studies course and progressing on to Dublin City University where she completed her Nursing Degree and worked in Beaumont Hospital. Emma is completing a Postgraduate Degree in Adult Education.
