Course Overview

The aim of this course is to give students a basic practical understanding of film photography and processing methods. You do not need your own equipment to attend this course

Course Content

The use of Film photography and cameras has increased over the past few years. There is renewed interest in using older film cameras to explore this medium such that manufacturers are now offering new ranges of film cameras and photographic materials.

To accommodate this we can offer a course to deliver a basic grounding in film photography in both black and white and colour. The course is based on practical demonstration, you will be able to develop your own film in class and learn about correct exposure and development methods.

  1. Introduction to film photography, how film works, and the history of the material/medium.
  2. Types of film, camera, lenses, and the different types of film sizes (format) available. Practical considerations when photographing with film.
  3. Development of film negatives and range of chemistry available to do this.
  4. Familiarization with darkroom equipment and printing methods
  5. How to easily set up processing at home.
  6. Integration of film photography into digital media
  7. Investigation of existing practitioners/photographers work eg, Annie Leibowitz, Ansel Adams, Eugene Smith, Diane Arbus, David Bailey

Tutor Biography

Dave Ruffles is a Professional Photojournalist with over thirty years of experience.

He originally qualified as a Medical Photographer(NHS) and lately a Master of Art Degree in Photography from Birmingham City University (UK).

His work has been published in The Observer Magazine, Irish Farmers Journal
