Course Overview

This course is designed to enhance your knowledge and understanding of sport psychology and enhance coaches and young players understanding of some key psychological factors, such as creating interventions to improve performance and understanding stress and anxiety in sport and how to best manage it.

Purpose 

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill, and competence to apply psychological principles in the coaching of team and individual sports in order to enhance performance. 

Learning Outcomes : 

  • Describe the role of the sports psychologist in the team and individual sports
  • Discuss the history and main theories of sports psychology
  • Explain how personality theories such as trait theories, attribution theories, and personality influence sports participation
  • Explain the relationship between attitude, self-confidence, aggression and outer barriers and performance
  • Explain how arousal, stress, and anxiety affect performance in sport
  • Describe the concept of motivation, what affects it, and how it can influence performance
  • Show how leadership plays a part in coaching and participation in sport
  • Describe the importance of goal setting in improving performance
  • Identify appropriate long and short term goals with a view to producing an improvement in a sporting context
  • Identify how role models can have a positive and negative influence on performers
  • Identify leadership characteristics in sporting contexts

Tutor Bio - Johnny Glynn 

Main Qualifications

B.Sc. Sport & Exercise Science, UL 1997UEFA Pro-Licence, 2016 UEFA Academy manager 2019

Johnny holds qualifications in, Sport Psychology and Golf Biomechanics. Having played soccer at the highest level for 15 years including spells in the USA and Norway, Johnny has worked as a high-performance Coach and Sports Educator for the past 22 years. Having been appointed the first full-time fitness coach at Connacht Rugby in 1999, Johnny has worked in many sports following his soccer playing career. He was head fitness coach at both the Galway senior football and hurling teams under John O Mahoney and Noel Lane.

He has also coached for 3 years with the Clare senior hurlers under manager Anthony Daly. He has also specialized in Golf Biomechanics and was head of the Munster underage elite boys teams for 10 years. Currently, he holds the position of Head of Academy at Galway United, specialising in talent identification and player development. Johnny has been employed at GTI for over 10 years and has taught Sport Psychology for the past 8 years.
