The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to enable them to care for and address the needs of a person and their family after the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness, in a dignified, inclusive and holistic manner.

General Aims of the Course

· Provide holistic care for persons diagnosed with a life- limiting illness and in the last days of a person’s life and also for their families, carers and significant others

· Communicate effectively with persons with a life-limiting illness and in the last days of a person’s life and also with their families, carers and significant others

· Enhance the quality of life of the person with a life- limiting illness

· Recognise and respect the uniqueness of each person’s approach to death

· Work effectively as part of the healthcare team

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites:

  • Level 4 Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.
  • As part of the assessment criteria for this course students’ will need to carry out practical demonstrations, all candidates who enrol for this programme must have the agreement from their supervisor/manager in the work place to oversee their practical work.

Progression to further Studies

  • This course leads to a Level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications.
  • Students who successfully complete this programme may use this Level 5 credit towards completing a Major QQI award in any of the Major awards mentioned below:

Nursing Studies 5M4349 Health Service Skills 5M3782 Healthcare Support 5M4339.

Certification:QQI Level 5 Mionor Award

 

In order to gain work experience in this area, students must achieve Garda Vetting. For application for Grada Vetting all applicants will be required to provide documents to validate their identiy and current address.
