My name is Estella Collins, I completed the Health Service Skills programme at GTI in May 2019 as a mature student. I felt that this course would give me the skills I needed to provide the best care possible for my mother who had been very ill. I have been very involved in looking after family members and I knew this was a career I wanted to pursue. I had heard such positive things about the course here in GTI. I had some fears about returning to college. Mainly, would I be too old ? and would I be able for the work? . I have to say from the minute I stepped inside the door I felt so welcomed and my fears were put at ease. Both the tutors and the students were so encouraging and friendly. There was such a diverse mix of people in the class, all with their own life experiences and ideas. More importantly I developed important social and personal contacts through friendships at GTI which sustained me through challenging times. I had exciting opportunities while at GTI. I completed training in the Erasmus plus program. I never thought I would be one of those students, but I was. I had the most memorable experience on Erasmus, working in a hospital and living for three weeks in Madrid. Now I am working as an agency HCA for CPL Healthcare. I work between three hospitals, Portiuncula, Merlin Park and the University College Hospital Galway. I am very passionate about my work. I couldn’t have got where I am today without doing my course in GTI and gaining such valuable experience on Erasmus. If I was to recommend something about starting a course here at GTI I would say enjoy it to the full as the year goes so quickly, keep up with projects as there are many and enjoy all the extra opportunities they have to offer.
Every year, students who successfully meet the criteria for this exciting opportunity, will travel to Madrid in Spain where they will work under supervision of senior care workers in a busy hospital setting for 3 weeks. These placements are fully funded by the European Commission.
