Social, Policy and Family Studies 5M2181

• This programme will introduce you to the theory and practice of the key areas of social studies, social care and family studies. This is the ideal starting point if you wish to progress to further studies or gain employment in community-based health settings, especially those related to the family. Students will gain an understanding of a broad range of topics including protection of vulnerable people, intercultural studies, and the impacts of policy change in society.

This course is designed to:

· Enable students explore the theory and practice of the key areas of social studies by exploring a wide range of social issues

· Enable students to understand the needs of families and develop an understanding of care provision in the public, private and voluntary sectors

· Develop an awareness of the impact of social exclusion and disadvantage on the lives of individuals and families

Entry Requirements
  • Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied, or equivalent.

  • Pre-entry guidance meeting

  • Mature applicants welcome

  • At registration students will be requested to complete the necessary documentation in order to complete a successful garda vetting process. Garda clearance is a mandatory requirement for work placement.

· Students who successfully complete the course may gain entry to Third Level Institutes and Colleges through the Higher Education Links Scheme.

· Progression from 5M2181 to all ATU courses (except Nursing) and many University of Galway courses.

This is a full-time one-year course and runs from September to May.
